This is the last of the joints that are left-over from the abandoned rock project which keeps coming up in these posts. It’s one of the hardest for me to listen to for a couple reasons: 1) I love Masta Ace’s “Slaughterhouse” a lot! 2) I don’t have much love for Queens of the Stone Age at all. In the end, I don’t think this joint deserves the trash bin. But, as always, you’ll be the judge of that.

R. Kelly + Grizzly Bear? Yup. And it sounds pretty okay.
Outkast’s “Bombs Over Baghdad” is one of those records which is super hard to touch: it’s weird, it’s crazy funky, and people love it. When I started to work on this joint, I was more concentrated on getting the beat to work (that’s Animal Collective, by the way) & the ‘Kast was just a placeholder acapella to try & get some structure worked out. But after listening to this over & over & over & over, I couldn’t imagine it without the Outkast. And, in the end, the acapella didn’t sound great (neither does the beat, haha), so I shelved it. But, like all of The Mulligans, there’s something there which I can’t quite throw away.
With The Mulligan this week, we’ll keep the action in Queens with a fairly liberal loop of The Menahan Street Band’s “The Traitor” and the M-O-B-B. The idea was to do a cover of sorts, while taking the song in a completely direction. I spent a fair amount of time trying to find someone to re-do the vocals because I felt like this acapella had been beat to death when the song came out. One friend, who’d probably prefer to not be reminded of the recording hell I put them through, even went so far as to re-do all the vocals. But, alas, it just wouldn’t click. So here it is with the original vocal. Hope you enjoy.

More outtakes from that ill-conceived rock project. This time, we take a trip to Queens, New York to hear what might happen if the Rotten Apple’s Royal Flush were to rap over a joint by soft-as-twinkie-filling lady-loving John Mayer.
